The film for this month on March 13th will be the sublime American Beauty. All the issues and grittier aspects of humanity which aren't usually talked about 'in church' are there.
Nudity, drugs, prejudices, sexual fantasies, mid life crises, murder, adultery, consumerism, materialism, death, selfishness, masturbation, homophobia and homosexuality - all feature in a narrative which explores the meaning of existence in a society where finding meaning can be difficult.
This makes the film sound rather dark - but it is hugely uplifting, and for many a masterpiece. It is a great film, full of beauty and meaning in its exploration of the ugliness and meaningless which can form the flip side to life. Hugely recommended by many people.
"...but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst..."

I second Tim's endorsement of this film; it's great.
To fit it all in and have some time for discussion we'll have to start prompt at 7.45.
GUTTED!! I now have to work Thursday evening... can't tell you how p'd off I am about that coz i love this film... Also agree with what Tim said - it is so thought-provoking & every time there's like a new layer to it... Sometimes need to explore the darkness to see the light... Will be thinkin of you!
Look forward to seeing it again. Feel free to poke me if I hum along to the soundtrack! I have it on my MP3 player a lot.
...and i suppose Ms. Suvari has nothing to do with the appeal of this film, eh?

When you see something like that, it's like God is looking right at you, just for a second. And if you're careful, you can look right back.
JANE
And what do you see?
RICKY
Beauty.

Janie's a pretty typical teenager. Angry, insecure, confused. I wish I could tell her that's all going to pass...
When I came out last night from SC, the roads were so quiet. It had rained. Everything smelled so fresh. The roads were still quiet, so I drove home most of the way at 20mph with nothing behind me listening to some of my favourite music, then pulled up outside the house, dropped the seat back whilst I finished listening the track and watched the clouds pass around the moon. That was beautiful.
i've been lucky enough to have countless moments of beauty since kitty's arrival, but sadly last night wasn't one of them. the little minx, having slept like an angel through the whole film, decided that 3.30am sounded like a good bedtime...
there's an interesting article on the bbc website today about homosexuality - interesting to read people's comments on it too:
