Divided we fall? :: Evolution, 3rd June

We'd like to invite you to our third monthly gathering, Thursday 3rd June at the Duke of Gloucester.

We want to create a place for Christians from all churches (or none) in the area to meet up and socialise while discussing some of the really thorny issues of the faith in a friendly way. If you'd like to come then we'd love to see you at 8pm, either tomorrow or another week - it will be on the first Thursday of each month.

We are continuing our series titled Divided we fall? which explores the issues that Christians often fall out over. This time we'll discuss whether living things were created supernaturally by God or whether they evolved naturally by Darwinian selection, or maybe somewhere in the middle.

There won't be a talk or anything like a sermon, but we'll provide a sheet of thought-provoking quotes and scriptures to help get conversations flowing. I've attached the quotes to this email so you can have a look beforehand, or if you can't come but are interested anyway! There should be something in there that you can agree with and disagree with; let's unravel it together.

21 May 2010

Cooking together, 27th May

Repeating the successful evenings we've previously done, we'll cook a meal and then eat it.

14 May 2010

Film night - Fight Club, 20th May

This is an amazing film about dissatisfaction with modern superficiality and a quest for something deeper and more true. Very funny too. However, it is quite violent in places and has an 18 rating.

Sellotape sculpture, rescheduled to 29th April

The idea is you wrap cling film around an object, then layers of sellotape. When ready you can cut away the tape layer, making a translucent shell that you can put fairly lights in. Come and have a try - please bring a big roll of tape and an object to be your mould.

Divided we fall? :: The Bible, 6th May

Hi everyone,

We'd like to invite you to our second monthly gathering, on Thursday 6th June at the Duke of Gloucester.

This time its the turn of the Bible - is it God's inspired word, or is it something quite different?

There won't be a talk or anything like a sermon, but we'll provide a sheet of thought-provoking quotes and scriptures to help get conversations flowing. I've attached the quotes to this email so you can have a look beforehand, or if you can't come but are interested anyway! There should be something in there that you can agree with and disagree with; let's unravel it together.

Here are the topics that we'll be covering in future events up to the summer:

June 3rd :: Evolution
July 1st :: Sexuality

Film night - Footloose, 15th April

Footloose is a 1984 American film that tells the story of Ren 'Footloose' McCormack, played by Kevin Bacon, a teenager who was raised in Chicago. Footloose moves to a small town where the local government has banned dancing and rock music. Ren and his classmates want to have a senior prom with music and dancing. They must figure out a way to get around the law and Reverend Shaw Moore, played by John Lithgow, who blames rock music's influence for the death of his first child. Rating 12A.

What would Jesus vote?

Right? Left? Centre? Green? BNP (who claim him as a supporter, bizarrely)? Would he just spoil his ballot paper in protest? Come and discuss with us this Thursday.

Divided we fall? :: salvation

We'd like to introduce you to a new monthly venture that is starting tomorrow at the Duke of Gloucester pub in Crewe. We want to create a place for Christians from all churches (or none) in the area to meet up and socialise while discussing some of the really thorny issues of the faith in a friendly way. If you'd like to come then we'd love to see you at 8pm, either tomorrow or another week - it will be on the first Thursday of each month.

There won't be a talk or anything like a sermon, but we'll provide a sheet of thought-provoking quotes and scriptures to help get conversations flowing. We are starting with an Easter themed debate; just how narrow or broad was Jesus' redeeming act? I've attached the quotes to this email so you can have a look beforehand, or if you can't come but are interested anyway! There should be something in there that you can agree with and disagree with; let's unravel it together.

Here are the topics that we'll be covering in future events up to the summer:

May 6th :: The Bible
June 3rd :: Evolution
July 1st :: Sexuality

Glass Painting

This week we'll be glass painting. If you have any old glasses or bottles that you'd like to jazz up - maybe an Easter present?... - then bring them along. Of course we'll be looking for God in this activity too (though not in the bottles themselves - that would make him a Genie lol!)

17 March 2010

V for Vendetta

This month's film is V for Vendetta. It is set in an imaginary near future where Britain is ruled by a fascist, totalitarian regime but I don't know much more than that! It is rated 15 for strong violence and some bad language.

02 March 2010

Duke of Gloucester

This week we'll meet at the Duke of Gloucester (map), normal time. See you there!

SofaChurch resumes...

...on the 18th February. We'll have a time of alt. worship and then discuss how we would like it to develop this year. I've had some ideas, and I hope you all have a bit of time to give it some thought before then.

Really hope to see you there!

Cafechurch Chester

It is hard to believe that a year ago we were about to hold our first cafechurch meeting. A lot has happened in that time and there has been much discussion concerning alternative venues and a more 'focused' approach.
However, you may be interested in a new cafechurch that has just started in Chester. Its hosted by Jon Newell, who had been the Costa Coffee Manager in Crewe but was transferred to a new store in Chester's Retail Park over the summer. Do check out their website to find out what is planned for the next few months. Maybe we could pop over and support them one evening.
