Spirituality in films

Many thanks to Bob for kicking us off with an interesting evening looking at the spiritual elements in secular films. We split into groups for discussion after watching clips from Rocky, Platoon, The Matrix and The Elephant Man.

If you know of other films that make you think along spiritual lines, do post a comment.

Plus, we're always after films to show the Circuit's teens, so if you know of any that might be good, let us know. So far we've shown them Saved! and The Truman Show. (I'm currently working out how I can convince Andy that Night At The Museum has Christian content... ;o))

Yes,a really interesting evening.Thank you Bob!
I enjoy films and have quite a big collection at home.To look into possible deeper and biblical meaning or parallel in their context is fascinating.

I'm going to get my thinking cap on now and see if I can come up with anymore examples for this blog.

I have got one excerpt in mind but it's one of another trilogy of films and I'll have to find out which one it was and re watch the scene.

Me again,I found the film I was looking for.

The last film in the Indiana Jones Trilogy "The Last Crusade" has a scene in it whereby Indy is faced with the prospect of crossing a very deep ravine with no perceptible bridge or way across.

He discovers that in fact there is an invisible bridge and it's as solid as is required but he will have to step out onto it with a massive "leap of faith."

This could be said to illustrate the way in which faith works.
We need to trust that God is there for us 100% plus and that we will just have to take that chance on him and step out into the unknown. He will see us safely across.

"Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see"
Hebrews 11 vs 1

Just one more thing...

I discovered a website which might be useful for sourcing films for run way.
It is Christiananswers.net on which there are reveiws of many films from a christian tangent.
I noticed it even has ideas for discussion topics so that could be
good to.

Hi Claire! Someone else up and about on this lovely sunny morning.

Thanks for those comments - I don't remember the Indiana Jones bit, but it does sound a great example of a spiritual theme.

Have you seen Finding Nemo? I found that incredibly moving. How the father fish goes searching for his lost son and won't give up until he finds him?

Perhaps you could show us the Indiana Jones clip at SofaChurch one week...? (scary suggestion!)

Yeah,I really like it especially the bit with turtles.

It has certainly got themes within it that point to humanity and Gods constant and unswerving love for us.

With regards to Indiana Jones,I haven't actually got a copy on DVD,only video.
However if I do get it at some point I might be persuaded(she says nervously.)

Don't blame you being nervous. I'm doing next week and every time I think of it, I get a turning over feeling in my tummy. (Or is it the baby wiggling?)

Thought I'd get it over with though ;o)

So, what are we looking forward to this week? :o)

Slowing down... my personal hot topic of the moment! How you make time for God in the bustle of daily life.

I'll be really interested to hear what folks say in the discussion part as it's something I find incredibly hard to do.

Andy has an idea for the meeting after this one, but would you be up for doing one soon, Tim? Andy thought you'd said you might not have time till the new year, so do say if things are too busy.
