Pie Rolling 2009

The pinnacle of the Cheshire sporting calendar takes place this Saturday - the annual Wybunbury Fig Pie Wakes. Please come! if you haven't been before, its a great little village event with Morris Dancers and the like, culminating in a competition where you have to roll a pie the furthest distance down the hill.

Festivities begin at 1pm, first pie rolled by the Mayor at 3pm.

I haven't entered for the last two years but am making a comeback this year. If you would like to enter you need to buy a ticket from the Post office or either pub in Wybunbury. Next step for me is to dust off my wooden practice pie and get to work on my rolling technique...

Oh no. Pie Rolling. Time for Mr Fish to take it all far too seriously, researching the best design according to various laws of physics, fabricating said wooden 'practise pie' and hogging the kitchen for the whole morning while he creates his pastry masterpiece.

Not to mention the drama of the actual moment of rolling, the tears (his) and the laughter (mine) as the crummy (crumby?) thing shatters into a million pieces two metres into its journey down Wybunbury hill.

Come along and share the whole wonderful experience. Please.

Bother. We loved it last year and would definitely have come, but I'm off to Coventry for a knitting day instead!

Maybe next year - and good luck with your pie Andy!

Don't encourage him...

Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it. Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable garland, but we an imperishable one. So I do not run aimlessly, nor do I box as though beating the air; but I punish my body and enslave it, so that after proclaiming to others I myself should not be disqualified.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others' pies better than your own.

Progress update: The pie has now been made and is in the oven. I have gone for the same design as last time, a ring shaped pie with a 24cm diameter outer tread. Last time I baked it a bit too long and made it too brittle so I'll have that in mind this time.

Thanks for that, Andy. I'm sure, like me, everyone has been on the edge of their sofas, wondering how your pie was progressing.

I'll overlook my wife's jealous comment.

Well, it's all over now. I had a few mishaps during construction that led to some weak points in the ring, and it took longer to bake than I anticipated (or had) so it was somewhat under-cooked this time and therefore a bit squidgy.

The judge who checked the pies in said "oh, its you again, the one who makes these amazing unusual pies - you're a genius!". Actually, that's not entirely true; she said something about cheating and how they would have to have a committee meeting if I won to decide if it was a valid entry or not.

That wasn't necessary as it broke in two soon after release to cries of disappointment from the crowd.

Next year...
