Dogma

This weeks' film is Dogma, produced by controversial Catholic producer and film star, Kevin Smith.

(I'll ask Andy what to write about it as my recommendation would be along the lines of: "Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Salma Hayek and Alan Rickman - something for everyone there.")

So, to quote Andy:
"The film is a very irreverant and crude comedy that explores how God and humans relate to each other. It caused an outcry in Christian circles when it was released. It's certainly not for you if you can't tolerate bad language (it's an 18 because of the copious amounts of swearing - sex and violence is fairly minimal)."

Have you noticed that "Dogma" backwards is "amgod"?

It's a good film, some thought provoking stuff. Helen & I watched it eons ago it seems.

Highly irreverent and rude it treads where religious people won't. So I really recommend it.

A few films to recommend:

What the #$*! Do We (K)now!? - exploration of metaphysics, theology and science (it's possible Andy might have problems with it!), Religulous a caustic and funny deconstruction of the worst excesses of religion but ends up with a conclusion as extreme and destructive as that which it rails against, and Sex and the City Movie, which stands alone well from the series, and covers just about every relationship issue people in their 30s, 40s & even 50s can cover. More of a chick flick, but it does have moral and meaningful content!

Tim says I've seen it but I don't remember at all (I have absolutely no memory for films I've seen, books I've read, jokes I've heard) so I'll probably be along on Thursday to see it again!

...and you did enjoy it Helen, honest. You even enjoyed one of the theological points made in discussion by the angels. I remember it so well because it's not often you comment on theological points made by films! :o)

I reckon you'd enjoy watching Alan Rickman as the voice of God, Helen. (Have I got your 'type' right?)

I won't give the game away for those who've not seen it, but I love the choice of actor for the role of God too.

What did you think then, guys? I hear the reaction was a bit mixed...

Oh, and watching the Sex and the City movie at SofaChurch? Yes, yes, yes!

(Sorry - that wasn't supposed to sound quite so cheeky...)

Alan Rickman as the Voice of God. Swooooooon!

I loved the film, lots to think about and lots to laugh at! I have seen it before (some of the scenes looked vaguely familiar) but didn't remember it at all so it was as though I was watching it from new.

Favourite line? Has to be 'This is not a drill. This is the Apocalypse...'

Have you seen the Sex & The City Movie, Suse?

I wish, Tim. SOMEONE refused to see it with me.

But I really liked the series. That said, I did once watch entire series' back to back from LoveFilm, and started to feel a bit sleazy after a while (not in a good way ;o))

It's very good, Suse. Have never seen the series - but I recommend the film. Has some punches in it...
