2001: a space odyssey

9th October - Stanley Kubrick's classic film.

Beautiful visuals and music, very sparse and atmospheric. Plenty of spiritual meaning. Plus my mum's old boss made the stewardess hats. Do you need any more of an incentive to watch this film?

I think we need a pic of those stewardess hats, And...

I've duly changed the picture for this post.

It's the film's 40th anniversary, by the way.

'Hello sofachurch'

That was a very strange yet compelling movie.I came away last night with a fuzzy head, full of imagery and sounds from it.

A few moral issues and also very human ones too.
How human can a computer be? Was it right to Kill it/him?
Poor HAL! A mixed up 9000 series, not good.

The sequence at the end where Dave watches and then becomes himself getting older to be then almost reborn I suppose (the feotus in space looking at Earth)may have some spiritual meaning within it but it could be open to many a conclusion.

I may not make much sense on this post but that will match my slightly dazed and confused feeling at the end of last nights meeting.

Thoroughly enjoyed it of course.

The film chimes nicely with my own way of reconciling the Genesis creation story with what I understand of evolution. I think that human-like creatures evolved in the standard way according to natural selection and then at some point God intervened and did something to some of them. These then went on to develop into humans. I'm not sure that God necessarily used a black monolith to achieve this, however.

I like all the space bits: those funky costumes and minimal white interiors combined with the classical music. It's visually very yum.

But HAL gives me nightmares. "Daisy, daisy..." Eek!
