On Thursday 18th September we'll be discussing the current Large Hadron Collider experiment in Geneva and see how it intersects with and informs our faith. One of the main aims is to discover the Higgs Boson, nicknamed the 'God particle'. Might it create black holes on the way? Will it cause the world to end? Will we find God, or will we find out more about about him?

Should have been wiped out at 8.30am.Well,we're still here! For the moment(hee hee.)
Cool.
Is it a one off experiment, or are they going to repeat it? Are we off the hook yet? Or is there still a tiny chance of being turned inside out on a planetary scale by a mini black hole?
They haven't actually collided the protons yet; today's milestone was getting a bunch of protons to complete one loop of the tunnel. They will have eventually have two bunches travelling opposite directions which, when ready, they will steer into each other to collide them. This is scheduled for mid-October.
Times today HERE
This big experimenet which could destroy the world makes me think of a mad scientist plotting somewhere, whilst stroking a big, white, fluffy cat. Hang on a minute...
Less of the fluffy cat.According to some sources there were some scientists still in their pyjamas and fluffy slippers present when the experiment began last week.More of a case for Clouseau I think?!?
Sorry,on a slightly more serious note, yesterday feeling decidedly full of cold I listened to a light hearted broadcast by Brian Cox (the guy that used to be with D:Ream in the 90's and decided particle science was more exciting and went on to help build Atlas for the LHC)he was talking to likeminded folk (mainly comedians)about their fascination with physics and cosmology. That was kinda fun!It was entitled Physics Rocks, bit of a naff title but hey!
