SofaChurch fun trip

We've been wondering, following on from the recent discussion on community - would anyone be interested in a little SofaChurch excursion?

This could be something along the lines of... hiring a minibus for a day, driving to a beach, having fun, picnicing, fish and chips or barbecue in the evening, coming home.

Or, more adventurously, a weekend away - possibly camping, or hiring a big house somewhere if everyone could comfortably afford it.

We think it would be much fun, what does everyone think?

Personally,I think this would be a really good thing to do.Away from the four walls of sofa church(lovely though they are) in the fresh air and in a fun environment(the seaside would be cool but i'm not really fussed about the venue) getting to know each other in new and different ways.Anyone like rounders,it's been ages since I played that? I would like the opportunity to let my hair down a bit with the group because I tend to get quite shy on a Thursday evening and therefore maybe this would be helpful to me in that regard,it might just bring me out of my turtle shell a bit.

Aw, but what a lovely shell it is, Claire.

I love this idea! I don't really mind what we do so I'm going to watch other people's ideas before I chip in again (actually I am possibly just too lazy to think of anything sensible right now!)

I love the idea of a weekend in a house/cottage somewhere, but we couldn't think of anywhere big and cheap to accommodate us all... I don't suppose anyone has a family member with a spare holiday home hanging around, do they? No, neither do I! Just thought I'd ask...

Where do church groups go for weekends away? Are there special retreat-type centres that might be reasonably priced? I'm imagining we'd cater for ourselves.

We also had a vague idea that we could all write down (privately) on bits of paper how much money we'd be able to contribute, then work out from there what we could afford as a group.

As for a day away, we were wondering about a place Liverpool way - there's the beach with the Anthony Gormley sculptures on it, and a nice red squirrel sanctuary, also near the beach. We could have a picnic, play rounders (Claire!) Andy was thinking we could hire a minibus (as the journey's often the nicest bit, isn't it?)

Beach trip sounds cool to me, and the kids would be in their element.

The sculptures at Crosby ('Another Place') are excellent. Fantastic meditative / contemplative aids.

The Formby squirrels are fine if you get there before anyone else, otherwise the furry fiends are stuffed and gone to sleep it off in the trees!

Youth Hostel do a renting out a site thing; not used it for a few years, and the YHA is increasingly prohibitive for low wage families in its structure and pricing, and really has nothing on its founding principles. We find it's often cheaper to stay at a travelodge type thing.

Anyway, their website for hiring out things is HERE.

There will be the devil in the detail of finding a time when everyone who wanted to go, could go.

Mos def worthwhile IMO.

Wow, what a fab idea both for a day trip to the beach or similar, plus weekend away. Just be wonderful to simply spend some time together.

Its a real shame what Tim says about the YHA... we used to go to some great, cheap places with both the youthgroup and CU. How many folk would we be thinking of accommodating?

Just had a quick look at youth hostels - there's a nice one in Bangor that costs £13.95 per night per person. Perhaps if we just did one night? North Wales might be a nice area to explore; nice beaches too, especially on Anglesey.

Hi Suse - booking out hostels is for the entire weekends only, and Bangor hostel is closing this autumn :o(

I do agree with North Wales - but the danger there is for me to go into historical guide mode what with my Forthcoming Book ;o)

The hostel at Rowen is fantastic, but a demanding mountain road ascent!

We wouldn't need to book out the place necessarily. And it would be rather interesting to have our own personal tour guide... :o)

Ah right I get you :o)

Well, Anglesey is one of the best places for Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments you could wish for...

also some cracking good beaches, and Newborough is one of the most beautiful places on Earth... cool geology too.

stacks of really ancient churches, amazing scenery.

What's the possibility of group camping?

Camping would be great, though I think Andy's thinking of it happening in the new year, which might be a bit chilly!

Perhaps we should focus on the day out bit, as that could happen soon and would require much less organising? Perhaps find out rough numbers then go from there.

Any ideas when the day out would happen? This summer, autumn?

Curiously

We're thinking this summer would be good. Just need to float the idea at a meeting, get some idea of what folk fancy doing, when most people are free and plan it from there.

I think Andy's thinking of hiring a minibus. What do you think would be fun to do? I like the idea of a beach trip, which could be Liverpool way or Wales. Having the Kitt-ster around, a relatively local trip would be good for me...

In agreement here; all of us would be open to it - though almost every weekend in August is accounted for except the last. After that the next free weekend day is Sat 20th Sept.

North Wales coast (Prestatyn) or west / north Wirral may be good for beaches. What do you think?

We'll not be with you for the barbie, but should be around for the 80s SOP.

Yes - would love to go to the seaside! And I think a day out where we can chill with each other & do something different would be fab - i know I'm often rushing in straight from work so will be more relaxed :) please please no camping though - I'm allergic!! (not really I just have comfort issues!!)

Aw, Geoff! I was hoping you'd want to come to Greenbelt with us (and not just so you can babysit Kitty)
