Worry

Don't worry - I'm not making you watch The Sound of Music this week! I thought as Andy's at a parent's evening, I'd take the opportunity to look at another of my 'hot topics' - worry.

Why do we worry? What do you worry about? What does the Bible say about worry? How can we stop worrying?

Come along and we'll discuss the issue then have a time of giving our worries to God. See you then.

That was a really helpful discussion - thanks everyone! It's handy picking a subject you want help on yourself... ;o)

I thought I'd make a note of what has stuck with me from the discussion.

I liked David Win's idea that more good things tend to happen in life than bad, so being optimistic is the better way.

I also liked other David Wat's thoughts that everything God lets happen to us, he uses for good. I'd been thinking that my worrying was legitimate, as I've seen from experience that God lets bad things happen to Christians too. But to remember that we can still trust God, good times or bad, is a great way to combat worry.

From my evangelical days, I remember a little anecdote that the Bible has the phrase "Do not worry" (or very close forms) some 366 times. Now, you can guess how one applies that, I assume. I've never checked it though!

But that's worrying in itself... makes you wonder if God knows that we will have lots of reasons to worry in our lives (but he'd still like us to try not to).

I've been trying to give things to God more, as Pat suggested. It seems to be working too (though of course that's easy to say when things are going well).

I always liked that hymn, 'What a Friend we Have in Jesus'... the lines about being weak and heavy laden, and taking it to God in prayer.

I think the mistake I make, is thinking that prayer has to be a big event where I sit down quietly and spend 20 minutes meditating with my palms upwards.

When I remember that prayers can also be simple God-ward shouts of 'help' when I'm in the thick of it, I find I do it more often and perhaps get better results ;o)
